David Van Schoyck began writing tunes before he even knew what that meant. “I can remember a goofy little tune popping into my head one day, complete with lyric, while I
was bored in school one day. I think it was the second grade. I went around singing it
in my head over and over until it just stuck there and there it was.”
He took his first guitar lesson in 1966 at age 11. He knew right away that guitar would
be a dominant factor in his life from that point on. Jazz entered the picture early in his
life, 1969, as one of his first teachers was an elderly jazz player who taught him many of
the so called “jazz standards” in chord melody arrangements.
Becoming a rock star was not far from his mind as he studied classical guitar at the University
of Southern California in 1973. In 1976 he left school to work full time in rock
and roll in the L.A. area for the next ten years. After that he started several of his own
bands and continued to write. He was encouraged to turn back to jazz by another
teacher in the early 90’s and has been pursuing that passion ever since.
He has just finished his second jazz CD entitled “D Flat Samba.” His first one was
called “Too Much Spice.” Both contain all original music. He currently teaches private
guitar lessons in Chandler AZ and is busy writing songs for his next project.
